| From the Desk of Julie Laufer |
No doubt it's been a long year for all of us as we tighten the belt, spend frugally and reconsider any expenditures. Doom and gloom not withstanding, the climate feels like it's changing; there's evidence of more traction in the market, candidates are finding permanent positions as well as temporary positions a little bit quicker. We have cobbled together some uplifting and helpful data for you to peruse in this issue. Perhaps it is opportune that Thanksgiving is here. We do have much to be grateful for, and look optimistically ahead for 2010. Be well and safe this holiday! |

| Featured Temp: Kate Wynne |
I am so grateful, and surprised, to find myself in such a wonderful situation. The company where I am now suits my personality, my commuting needs and supports my lifestyle.
I have a lot of experience as an administrative/executive assistant, and when I came to Laufer and Associates, I was really trying to find a way to make the most of it and get a really great working experience. That is exactly what happened.
The environment here is great, they value me as an individual, my skill set and my experiences and the only reason
How I ended up in such a good situation is because of Laufer and Associates. The hiring manager wanted a recruiter who understood how key the right fit was for this position... so she went to Kelly at Laufer and Associates. I wanted to be working in a position that was rewarding in more than one way.
I am so glad that I went to Laufer and Associates, they helped me find what I was looking for.

| Unemployment Statistics: Is There a Silver Lining? |
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released the job rates for October at the beginning of November and the numbers were higher than expected. The number of Americans claiming unemployment went up nearly half a percent to 10.2%, the highest rate since 1983.
President Barack Obama commented on the statistics, saying it is "a sobering number that underscores the economic challenges that lie ahead."
But hidden among all this doom and gloom is some good news; the number of temporary jobs increased by 34,000. This marks the third straight month of gains for temporary employment.
Temp Jobs on the Rise
What does this mean for the 15.7 million Americans who are out of work? As Joseph Lazzaro says on Blogging Stocks website, "Historically, a rise and sustained turnaround in temp jobs usually precedes an increase in overall employment." Near the end of a recession companies tend to "test the water" by bringing aboard employees as temps. As business continues to improve these temp employees are transitioned into permanent roles.
Improving Developments
As a recent news article from Yahoo points out, even though we are seeing evidence of improvement in the job market, there were over 190,000 jobs eliminated in October 2009. Albeit, a substantially smaller figure than the 500,000 and 600,00 that were reported a year ago, the number is still high.
Demographics Matter
These staggering numbers do not necessarily accurately represent the current state of the economy in all demographics specific to your job hunting prospects. Not only does it not show the increase seen in temporary jobs, it also doesn't reflect the various demographics that make up the United States. For example, the unemployment rate as of the end of September for white women, ages 25 to 44 with a college degree was only 3.6%, while the rate for black men ages 15 to 24 without a high school degree was 48.5%. Everyone else falls somewhere in between.
This illustrates how the current economic landscape is dramatically worse than 10.2% for some and substantially better for others. To see where you fall in the statistics check out the interactive graph on the New York Times online. |
| Resume Tips! |
Welcome back for the second installment of "Resume Tips!" Last edition I spoke about bullet points, how to use them and why it's so important to incorporate them into your resume. To view the full first article click here.
I also touched on the changing your resume to fit the job you're applying for. I gave one easy way to customize your resume. In this article I will give you another.
Use the key words in the job ad in your resume.
Go through the job description, picking out the points that match your skill set and incorporate the wording into your resume. For example, if one of the key responsibilities in an ad is "Welcome all visitors," make sure to use that phrase in your resume. You can change a phrase like "Greeted all customers" to "Welcomed all visitors."
Continue on through the ad, picking out key words and phrases and including them in your resume as in the example above. And that's it! You've just customized your resume.
