December's Delights!
Letter from the President, Julie Laufer
Julie

It's December and hard to fathom that 2006 is already coming to a close! We have met this year head on with a celebration of Laufer and Associates' 5th Anniversary and several new, fresh faces who have joined our growing team.

December is also a time to take stock of your goals and consider the resolutions you're scripting for 2007. Consider ways in which you can shape your current career into your ideal one. Looking into 2007, it is important to keep asking yourself evaluative questions like: what aspects of my career truly excite me? Or, how can I balance professional and personal demands so that I feel fulfilled in both arenas?

Focus on your own renewal. Call us to help with your reprioritizations for 2007; we're here to help!

Peace and Happy Holidays to all!

Julie Laufer

December is supposed to be a time of good cheer, but it can sometimes turn into a stressful mess. The holidays can feel overwhelming-with so much to do you may be tempted to put your job search on hold. But December can actually be a great chance to get a jump on the market and allow you to settle down into a fantastic new job in early January 2007!

In her article, "A Recruiter's View: 5 Myths about Holiday Job Hunting," Sianara Stull O'Donnell dismantles these common myths and explains that in her experience the holiday season is no time to take a break from job hunting. The first myth that O'Donnell attacks is that "nobody hires in December" and she has rebuttals for why this isn't the case:

  • Many companies must spend the money in their budgets before the end of the year
  • People tend to want to tie up loose ends before the end of the year
  • Positions open up as people are leaving their jobs to begin new ones in January
  • The holidays don't affect much of a change in some businesses
  • Strong companies often want to start the new year off with a bang

It's important to remain flexible in your schedule to accommodate hiring managers who may be in and out of the office. Your dedication to interviewing and obtaining that position will also be noticed, writes O'Donnell. By demonstrating how devoted you are to your job search, you'll impress potential employers who will envision you making that same commitment to your work for them.

John Rossheim writes in "Understand Recruitment Cycles to Give Your Job Search an Edge" that "December isn't as slow as it used to be and applications tend to slow down during the holiday season more than openings do-tipping the balance in favor of those who do apply." He quotes recruiter Josiah Whitman, who says "hiring managers and bank CEOs will typically try and reduce their operating profits by incurring search fees towards the end of the year, to avoid paying taxes." These factors make December a surprisingly hot time for hiring.

In the midst of all the month's chaos: take a break from the shopping, the baking and the gift-wrapping, to scope out some of the opportunities available to you though Laufer and Associates!

For the past two months, I have been a temporary Support Contractor at a software firm in Waltham. During this time, I have recorded issues clients had with their software in order for Customer Support to resolve the issue or question in a timely manner. I have also managed the calendar in which clients request upgrades and installations of the company's software.

The middle of November was quite competitive between the two floors at the company. Over the past few years, the company has participated in the annual Food Drive for the shelters in Waltham, with each floor trying to raise more. Within this friendly competition, employees brought in non-perishables, donated money through a fifty-fifty raffle, and in canisters that were located on each of the two floors. Between the money that was collected in the fifty-fifty and the canisters, several employees went to the store to purchase as many items as possible. In the end, the floor I work on won by over 300 items and as a whole we raised approximately 2300 non- perishable items, an outstanding accomplishment since it was more than double the items donated last year. This job has been a excellent opportunity and learning experience-not only do I work with great people, but the company's diverse and international client base have taught me a great deal.

This past spring, after being laid off, I found myself back in the job marketplace looking for a new position. At first I felt a bit displaced-career networking can be extremely stressful. Luckily, I soon found the perfect place to be in! I did my research on-line and shortly thereafter contacted Laufer and Associates. I met with Julie Sheehan at Laufer and Associates and I was immediately impressed with her tact and professionalism.

To be honest, my previous experiences with agencies had left me a bit skeptical. I had been to agencies in the past where they had lied to me regarding positions they supposedly had available and they had undersold positions to me. My skepticism was put at ease soon after my interview with Julie. Julie's knowledge, tact and understanding of the industry all ensured my trust. Within a short time I was sent on an interview with an extremely reputable company! This interview not only impressed me that Laufer means business; it also made me confident that Laufer listens. They were not using fictitious positions just to get me to sign on.

Career networking can be time consuming and costly. To have an efficient and effective team to work with such as the Laufer team can make an enormous difference, as it did in my career search! I interviewed for a Temp to Hire position and prior to that I was properly prepared by the coaching that I received from Laufer. This coaching was an invaluable process prior to starting with their client! Personally, I would fully recommend to a potential candidate taking the chance on a Temp to Hire position. A Temp to Hire position is a super opportunity to show your worth to your potential new employer! I can't think of a better way to see if this position is truly for you! With temping, you are able to keep your skills sharp, meet new colleagues, understand the company's environment, their expectations, your commute etc.

During my tenure as a Temp I received follow up calls and emails from Laufer and Associates. Fortunately, I was on a Temp job that required little back up but I felt at ease knowing that I was not alone!! Soon I was offered a permanent spot. Where one door closes another one opens! What would normally be seen as a difficult time became a fond memory because of Laufer and Associates.
