From the Desk of Julie Laufer |
In like a lion, out like a lamb, or not? April has been a tremendous month for boosting confidence in the job market, and we continue to feel a level of optimism for the recent spate of new jobs being created in Massachusetts. Hot spots for us persist in the finance and investment world, but all the indexes are starting to emerge from deep sleep.
The private sector added 8,900 jobs in March. Five of the ten private sectors added jobs; the largest gains occurred in Professional, Scientific, and Business Services; Trade, Transportation, and Utilities; and Education and Health Services. Year to date, the Bay State added 29,800 jobs; the private sector added 31,200 jobs. Over the year, the Bay State added 30,300 jobs; the private sector added 34,600 jobs.
Now's the best time to flex your interviewing muscle and see how you might benefit from changing your job!
Email us today! Cheers, to good living and working to you all.

Success Story: Colleen Cronin |
"I have been fortunate to have known Julie Laufer for over 20 years. When I first moved to Boston I went in to see her about employment. Being a young, naive girl fresh out of school I didn't know what to do or anything about the job market in Boston. All I can say is, 'Thank God for Julie'.
Julie placed me in my first 'real job'. Not only did it turn out to be a great experience it also turned into a stepping stone for my next job which Julie, again, placed me. I would like to emphasize, not only did Julie place me, she counseled and mentored me. When I was confused or concerned I knew I could reach out to her for advice and she would always find time to help me. I can't imagine any other recruiter taking care of me like Julie did and continues to do.
After a long employment at my previous job it became time to make another move. I was looking for something new, exciting, challenging and rewarding. Of course, Julie was my first call. Julie again, sat with me to talk about what I had been up to, what I was looking for and wanted to know how she could help. Her genuine kindness and desire to help her candidates is so obviously authentic, you feel as though you are talking to your friend, not a business associate.
Julie immediately was on the hunt to find me the perfect job – and she did. It didn't come as a surprise to me when Julie called me and told me she had the ideal job for me. She couldn't have been more correct. After a short search, Julie introduced me to my new employer and my future here looks very bright.
If it weren't for Julie, throughout all the years, I am confident in saying, I don't know where I would be.
Thank you Julie."

Temp (to Hire) of the Month: Mary Taylor |
"I came to Laufer and Associates after working with a few other agencies in the Boston area. Although I was getting interviews and a few temp positions, there was something missing in my on-going job search. I came across a Laufer and Associates and I noticed a difference immediately. The professionalism of the staff and Julie's infectious energy left me with a renewed and positive outlook in my job search. Within in one week, Julie and her team placed me into the perfect temp to hire role. Even after my placement, the individual attention and follow up continued. Julie and her team periodically check in with me to just see how I am. This and my entire experience make me feel proud to be a member of the Laufer team."

That Tempting Counter Offer
…And Why You Shouldn't Take It
|
Picture this scenario: You make $50,000 in your current job, but you've been interviewing. You received the highly anticipated phone call–You just were offered a new job making $55,000. Then you start thinking, my current job isn't that bad and I know they really need me here… maybe if they offered me more money I would stay. Stop right there. Don't even think about it!
Using another job offer as a bargaining tool can be very tempting, but the end result won't be worth it. If you are looking for a raise, then you need to use your negotiating skills, not a threat to leave the company. These are five good reasons why you should not take the offer:
- Counteroffers are often made on a panic driven impulse. Your employer might be thinking, "If Sarah leaves in two weeks, then we won't get the quarterly reports completed in time!" After this moment passes, you might find that your employer has weighed their options. You might soon realize they regret their decision and in turn they treat you differently. So now, you're the one who was looking to leave, but stayed just because of money.
- This scenario might be even worse: You are kept on at a higher rate, just until your employer finds your replacement. According to an article on usnews.com, "70 to 80 percent of people who accept counteroffers either leave or are let go within a year."
- Don't forget the reason you started your job search in the first place. You need to understand and weigh your own factors. There was a reason you started looking, and chances are, money was not the only factor.
- Let's say you're happy with your choice to accept the counteroffer. What happens when you want a raise again? Look at everything you had to go through in order to get the salary you wanted. You nearly quit in order to get that raise. You have no reason to believe that the next time will be any easier.
- Remember that amazing job offer you turned down? That company will probably never consider hiring you again. You just made them go through their entire hiring process only to be let down by your choice to take more money from your current employer.
We're not saying that there isn't a time and a place to accept a counteroffer, but we do want you to recognize the risks in doing so. It is very important to be extremely cautious and make sure you're making the right decision. If you are ever in this kind of dilemma, we are here to help. We want what's best for you. Let us help you weigh your options and assist you in making the best well-thought decision.

Transformations Since the 1940s
It's clear that a lot has changed since the 1940s. Walk into your house and what do you see? TVs, telephones (not to mention cell phones), computers, iPads, surround sound systems, etc. So much has changed that you don't even have to go to a physical class to be a student. With the combination of education and technology, you can now get a degree without ever setting foot in a classroom.

Then
In 1940, an average of 4.6% of those 25 and older had reported attending four or more years of college. With the accessability of school in this day and age, an average of 28.2% of individuals 25 or older had earned a bachelors degree or higher. The state with the highest rate of college graduates being our very own, Massachusetts, with a whopping 39%.

Now
The amount of individuals who have a higher education now versus the 40s, directly correlates to job industries as well. Before, 41.9% of people worked in manufacturing or agriculture. Now, with the higher levels of education, 23.2% of people work in educational services, healthcare, and/or social assistance, with manufacturing at a mere 10.4%.
