People are hustling and bustling this time of year. Whether you're trying to beat the crowds at the mall, counting down the days until your vacation, or patiently (impatiently) awaiting your last deal to close before the end of fourth quarter, this time of year can be hectic. Once you've slowed down from the chaos and completed your New Year's toast, it will be time to take a seat and figure out you
New Year's resolution(s).
Here are some resolutions you might want to take into consideration to make your 2012 the best year yet!
1. I will expand my network.
Only a portion of jobs are posted on job boards and social networking sites. By expanding your network, and meeting with people like those of us at Laufer and Associates, you are expanding your exposure to numerous possibilities.
2. I will update my resume and personalize my cover letter.
Your resume is never done. Never. And when I say never, I mean… (Ok, this is becoming redundant). What I'm trying to say, is that no time is better than the present to update your resume. Whether you are updating your current experience or adding skills, there is always something you can do to make your resume better. Don't allow yourself to lose an opportunity because your resume is outdated.
Recruiters, hiring managers, and whoever else might be the recipient of your cover letter, will be able to tell if your cover letter is personalized or not. Put in the extra effort, to make your cover letter memorable to whoever is reading it.
3. I will build my online presence.
You have probably heard it enough, but building an online presence is important. Think about what employers see when they do a Google search on your name. Consider participating in LinkedIn group discussions, "liking" a company (like us) on Facebook so you can view their job postings, or even develop your own professional webpage.
4. I will stay positive.
Nothing ruins an opportunity more quickly than negativity. Although looking for a job can be taxing and exhausting, it's imperative that you keep your head up. Negativity can be sensed by those around you-including recruiters and hiring managers.
5. I will be realistic.
It can be tempting to apply for every job you find that has an alluring title. Applying for positions that you are not qualified for, not only gets your hopes up, but it's a waste of your time. This will only further your frustrations with your job search. Conversely, it is important to set high goals for yourself-attainable goals.
So, take your last sip of sparkling cider and put on your thinking cap because it's time to take on the New Year with a bang and an amazing resume!
